It is with great honor that we have the opportunity to feature such an accomplished and esteemed designer as Barry Goralnick. Not only is his interior design work celebrated by the design industry, he has also contributed to numerous successful product design campaigns with some of the industry’s most premiere brands.
Goralnick’s signature Blended Modern™ style can be found from Palm Beach to Park Avenue and embodied in his designs of everything from lighting to tablewares. We love hearing his take on custom goods and how mixing unexpected elements is risky, but rewarding!
Barry Goralnick received a Master of Architecture from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. After apprenticing in Boston and Chicago, he worked for Wayne Berg Architect and Robert A.M. Stern Architects in New York, where he designed and executed many award-winning projects. Barry Goralnick Architects was founded in 1985. From its inception, BGA has specialized in both architecture and interior design. Commissions include a long roster of residential and commercial projects. Projects range from apartments, houses, executive offices, brokerage firms, to building lobbies and a synagogue. They have been located from all over the Tri-State area and New England to West Palm Beach and France.
Goralnick Architecture Design Studio designs product for a variety of premiere home and hospitality companies, including Villeroy & Boch, Watermark Designs, Currey & Company, Vanguard Furniture, Visual Comfort, and Stark Carpet among others. He has been awarded “Best Product Designer” by the ARTS Awards, the “Innovation In Design Award” from Cottages & Gardens (5-time nominee) and is a “Best of Year” Winner for Product Design from Interior Design.
Barry is a featured designer in Rizzoli’s new best-selling book Interior Design Master Class – 100 Lessons from America’s Finest Designers on the Art of Decoration, as well as Stark’s 75th Anniversary coffee table book, Decorating with Carpets.
Where do you take risks in your work?
I take risks in combining elements that are unexpected. In architecture it may be as simple as over-sizing moldings - too big is hardly ever too much. In interiors, I combine modern and classical elements. I like to pair patterns that you might not think of putting together, or paint a small room a dark color. Colors that may surprise you are likely worth the risk.
When should a home design enthusiast enlist the help of a design pro?
Design professionals bring a wealth of knowledge, education, and resources to a project. As an architect, I can create or reorganize a home to suit the needs of the client that will not only be beautiful, but function for their needs.
Why make custom goods instead of purchasing "off-the-rack" from retailers?
Over the course of their careers, designers collect a panoply of custom resources for specific client needs. Everything from upholstery, furniture, embroidery, and cabinetry, to almost every element in the home. Custom, hand-made elements can be of the highest quality and last forever, and they add a unique element that only you will have in your home. Despite the immense amount of product options available on the market today, nearly every home will present a unique need that is best suited for a custom solution.
How much of being a great designer is innate and how much is learned?
I feel that good design is an innate ability. It can be nurtured and enhanced by education and experience, but as in any art form, there is an intrinsic ability.
